5th October 2023

Sold for £82,160 inclusive of fees

Included in Day One of the Watch Auction on Tuesday 24th October 2023 is this fine and rare Rolex Submariner gentleman's wristwatch with the '369' Explorer dial. (Lot 50)

Despite GH having the privilege to handle over 10 similar examples since 2016, these models are extremely rare and highly sought after amongst international collectors. This privately owned example dates from 1964 and matches an identical dial version which we sold back in October 2017 and quite incredibly there is just 12 digits difference between the two serial numbers.

Watch Specialist, David Hare commented "it never ceases to amaze me that despite the rarity of these models, we keep finding them! I believe we have now sold nearly all of the dial variations which Rolex produced. It really is about dial condition with these particular pieces and whilst the case and bezel are well worn, viewing this particular dial out of the case I have to say the gloss and condition is remarkable for the age of the watch and just what the top collectors seek"

This piece was purchased by the present owner back in  November 1965 from Regent Jewellers Ltd, 93 Regent St, London W1 and comes with the original guarantee booklet.

The owner, was a model maker by trade and worked originally for the British Railway Model Department. He later joined the modelling workshop of Gerry Anderson who created 'Thunderbirds'  in the 1960s. The image below shows the owner model making wearing a watch which we believe to be this piece.
